“It’s no secret what time we are”: Devin Haney focused on avenging the loss of Ryan García

Bill Haney posted a clip of his son, Devin Haney, working out, fending off repeated slow left hooks from a trainer in what appears to be preparation for a rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025. Papa Haney said: “It’s no secret what time we are,“, which is a cryptic comment about them working hard, preparing for the second confrontation.

Haney’s Kryptonite

The left hook that Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) used repeatedly to floor Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) was kryptonite in their April 20 clash at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Bill doesn’t say if Devin will undergo a tune-up before facing Kingry again, but that would make sense.

Haney, 26, has already been out of the ring for seven months and can’t afford to lose all the money he could make in a tune-up fight before facing Ryan again.

He has to get back into action, win back the fans and prove he’s not mentally broken after what happened in his 12-round, three-knockdown majority decision loss to Kingry.

More importantly, Haney needs to stay sharp to give himself the best chance of avenging his loss. Garcia will face a tough Japanese fighter, Rukiya Anpo, on December 30, and that bout will help him prepare for a second fight with Devin.

Ryan was kicking Haney’s ass all over the ring last April and made it look so easy. The sad thing was that Devin didn’t make any adjustments to take away Ryan’s left hook, and it wouldn’t have been difficult to do so.

Neutralize the left hook

• Stop riveting: Ryan caught Devin with his left hook as he tried to clinch and never let up. I didn’t have to come looking for Haney because he was always there. This area is what cost Haney the fight.
• Keep your right hand up: Haney could have blocked Ryan’s left hooks if he had kept his guard up, but he didn’t. It was careless.
• Stay outside. If Devin is out, Ryan won’t be able to hit his basic shot and will be eating shots all night.
