Brazilian President Lula feels “well” after an operation for a brain hemorrhage

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is “doing well” after undergoing surgery for a brain hemorrhage, his doctors say.

The 79-year-old man was taken to a hospital in the capital, Brasilia, on Monday after complaining of a severe headache.

An MRI revealed the hemorrhage and Lula was transferred to the renowned Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo to have it drained.

The intracranial hemorrhage was caused by a blow to the head suffered when he fell in the bathroom of the presidential residence in October, according to a statement from the hospital.

Doctors said they had performed a craniotomy on the president, a procedure in which part of the skull bone is surgically removed to treat bleeding and relieve pressure. The bone is then replaced.

Lula is being monitored in the intensive care unit and is “well,” the hospital statement added.

He also said there were no complications during the surgery.

Lula slipped in the bathroom of the Alvorada Palace on October 19 and hit the back of his head.

They had to receive five stitches and, on the advice of their doctors, canceled their planned trip to Russia for a summit of the Brics countries.

He returned to full duty days later.

Lula has been in power since January 1, 2023 after narrowly defeating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a closely contested election.

During the election campaign, he often joked that he had “the energy of a 30-year-old.”
