Chris Evans is making a surprise return to the Marvel world.
The actor, 43, signed up Avengers: Judgment Day, according to a report he released The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, December 9.
Avengers: Judgment Day is slated for a May 2026 release, but it’s unclear what role Evans will play in the film.
Evans appeared as Captain America (aka Steve Rogers) in 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe titles between 2011 and 2019.
His character, Rogers, put away his shield as a superhero Avengers: Endgame. Due to this storyline, fans are wondering if Evans would return as Captain America/Steve Rogers, or just the Steve Rogers that no longer holds. Captain America’s cape.
Evans also appeared as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine earlier this year, leading to speculation that he could be playing the character — or someone else entirely.
Evans appeared at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle in March of this year and weighed in on the idea play Captain America again.
At the time, he said a return to the MCU was “not quite right at this point,” but teased, “I think there are more Steve Rogers stories that need to be told.”
Evans shared how he protects his most famous figure.
“But at the same time, I’m very, very valuable with it,” Evans continued. “It’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much and I don’t want to mess it up in any way.” I was part of something that was so special during a special time and in a way it really landed so well.”
During the panel, Evans also revealed that 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldierthe actor’s second foray into the masked crusader, was his favorite MCU film.
“It’s my personal favorite Marvel movie that I’ve been a part of,” he said. “It’s not just about the film itself, it’s about the experience. I was so nervous for the first movie. You know what you’re getting into and as a result you play defense and play not to lose. When The Winter Soldier came, we played to win.”
He also defended Marvel against criticism from people who like to take aim at superhero movies.
“Comic book movies in general, for whatever reason, don’t always get the recognition that I think they deserve,” Evans said during the panel discussion. “They’re big, giant movies. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is there. They are not easy to make.’
The actor added: “If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones.”
