Terence Crawford is being stubbornly secretive about the tactics he will use for his potential fight against three-belt unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in 2025.
Crawford is thirsty for the fight with Canelo, discussing money and how it would cement his legacy. Obviously, it would fit into the classification as “entertainment” but NOT like boxing because Crawford is too small and has little power to go up two divisions from 154 to 168 to challenge Canelo.
In Crawford’s recent junior middleweight debut against WBA champion Israil Madrimov on August 3, we saw that his power didn’t hold up from the 147 division. If Crawford can’t even hit at 154, how does he will he do at 168 against Canelo? Once again, a fight between them is “entertainment”, a “Show,” but not boxing.
In the real world, you move up in weight, fight the killers in the weight class, and WIN the title shot. They don’t give it to you in a booklet because of what you did against lesser fighters in other weight classes. Crawford should have to move up to 168 and beat these five:
Crawford’s chances of making it through these five sharks until Canelo’s payday are non-existent. That’s not happening. He will be eliminated by the first predator he faced, Iglesias, and will be forced to return from where he came from in 154.
His Excellency Turki Alalshikh says he will try to make the fight between superstar Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and junior middleweight champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) next year.
It’s going to costs a fortune to get to that showdown, as Canelo, 34, has resisted the idea of facing Crawford, seeing it as a bleak no-win situation. If Canelo eliminates Crawford, they will abandon him for choosing an old, small, weak 37-year-old fighter who never fought at 168 or 160.
“I don’t want to come in and say I’m going to box him. When I get in the ring, maybe I’ll stay in front of him. I don’t want to say that I’m going to stay there in front of him when I have to box him,” Terence Crawford told Carl Froch’s YouTube channel, refusing to reveal his game plan for a fight against Canelo Álvarez in 2025.
“I’m the type of fighter who makes adjustments on the fly. Throughout my career, I do what it takes to get the job done,” Crawford said. “That’s why we’re in the game, to leave a legacy.”
From what Crawford says, he will seek to follow the model of Floyd Mayweather Jr. by boxing and moving all night against Canelo to make him boring. In the end, that won’t be “entertainment” for the fans. It will be a scam and people will be furious that they wasted their money on this circus-level event.
There is absolutely NO chance in the world that Crawford will stand up and fight Canelo because his chances of success are minimal. He has been a counterpuncher and a driving force throughout his career. He will not deviate from that approach against Canelo and will be launched into the stratosphere.
