Crawford won’t retire if Canelo’s megafight fails in 2025

Terence Crawford says he doesn’t plan to retire in 2025 if he can’t get the fight with Canelo Alvarez he’s been pushing day and night for. He claims that a fight between unified super middleweight champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is one that “everyone” wants to see and will answer people’s questions.

Retirement is not imminent

Crawford, 37, won’t say who he’ll fight if he can’t get Canelo’s golden parachute retirement fight. IBF 154-pound champion Bakhram Murtazaliev and interim IBF champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. would be eager to fight Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). Those two champions would age Crawford with the wear and tear they put on it.

However, it is not realistic for Tererence to agree to fight any of those guys because they are big punchers, big young guys, and they would be looking to end their Canelo dream once and for all. It’s likely that if Crawford can’t get Canelo’s payday, he’ll head in the direction of fighting the WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion. Sebastián ‘The imposing hell’ Fundora because it is beatable.

Canelo vs. Crawford is actually NOT the fight American fans want to see. They would rather see David Benavidez face Canelo because he earned the opportunity and is in their weight class. His Excellency Turki Aalshikh would like to see Canelo-Crawford, who would be seen as a second or third option for the American public.

Fans would like to see Canelo fight Benavidez or the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. rematch. Dmitry Bivol 2 on February 22. Those are much better options for Canelo than a match against Crawford, which would be similar to when former 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo moved up to 168 and fought Alvarez last year.

Crawford is too small, weak and old to compete with Canelo. Fans don’t want to see Crawford follow Mayweather’s model of running in and pinning Canelo for 12 rounds that are painfully boring to watch. We are in 2024, not 2013. Fans want value for your money nowadays.

Looking for the best opportunities

“No, not yet. We are taking it day by day. Right now, I’m enjoying life and enjoying the fruits of my labor,” Terence Crawford told BoxNation when asked if there is any movement on a fight between him and Canelo Alvarez for 2025.

“I wouldn’t say that. Right now, I’m waiting on my options and looking for the best opportunities and options for Terence Crawford in my career,” Crawford said when asked if he’s ‘done’ with the sport if he can’t get the fight with Canelo next year.

“That’s why you look at it and see. That’s what everyone wants to see that we fight for because everyone has answers (correction: questions) that need to be answered. The only way to answer them is if Canelo and I get in the ring and fight. So if we fight, everyone’s questions and dos and don’ts will be answered,” Terrence said, explaining how a fight between him and Alvarez would play out.
