Dick Van Dyke has been keeping spirits up amid wildfires ravaging Malibu since Monday, December 9.
“Arlene and I evacuated safely with our animals, except that Bobo ran away as we were leaving,” said Van Dyke, 98. Facebook on Tuesday, December 10, referring to his wife, Arlene Silver. “We pray that he is okay and that our community at Serra Retreat survives these terrible fires.”
In a second update, Van Dyke shared a sweet video of his and Silver’s cat Bobo, writing, “I hope Bobo is ok.”
According to The New York TimesThe Franklin Fire had burned more than 2,7000 acres by Tuesday afternoon.
Affluent Malibu is home to stars including Van Dyke, Cher, Barbra Streisand and others.
Cher’s publicist, Liz Rosenbergtold the paper that the singer evacuated to a hotel on Monday along with her pets. Streisand’s spokesperson said Times was waiting for news of the Oscar winner’s whereabouts.
The tragic fire and Tuesday’s evacuation came just days before Van Dyke is 99 years old on Friday, December 13.
Earlier this year, Mary Poppins star jokingly said he hoped he would he still lives to celebrate his 99th birthday.
“I’m pretty old,” Van Dyke told a photographer in September Page Six.
When asked if he plans to celebrate his birthday in December, he joked: “I’m just praying I can make it.”
That same month, Van Dyke caused concern after canceling a number of scheduled appearances, including a fan convention in Utah.
“We regret to announce that Dick Van Dyke is unable to travel to FanX,” read a statement from FanX, which organizes the three-day event. “He expresses his gratitude to all who continue to support him, but at almost 99, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he can handle at this time.”
A legendary actor too eliminated from the 2024 Emmy Awards September 15 despite plans to become one of the evening’s presenters.
However, he did attend the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 7, where his CBS special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magicwon the award for Outstanding Variety Special.
Likewise joked that he was “still looking for a job” Van Dyke shared his hope that his legacy would be “laughter”.
“For making people laugh for 75 years,” he told reporters of what he wanted to be remembered for. “I’ve been in the business for 75 years, I can’t believe I’m still here performing!”
