Conan O’Brien grieving the loss of both his parents in less than a week.
Former late night talk show hostmother, Ruth Reardon O’Briendied at her home in Brookline, Massachusetts on Thursday, December 12, at the age of 92. Conan’s father, a renowned physician Dr. Thomas O’Brienthey died days earlier on Monday 9 December also at their home. Thomas was 95.
“Science says there is no such thing as perpetual mobile, but my father was proof that it was wrong,” Conan, 61, said Boston Globe in an interview published Thursday. “My father was constantly on the move. And he was interested in everything – absolutely everything.”
Conan credited his father with instilling a love of comedy in his children. According to GlobeThomas introduced his and Ruth’s six children Charlie Chaplin and Marx Brothers films.
Hollywood in 2024 was mourning many celebrities. Speed Racer star Christian Oliver (born Christian Klepser) died at the age of 51 in a fatal plane crash on January 5. “But he was often the funniest guy in the room. And when he laughed, his whole body twisted and he almost hugged himself,” Conan said.
“For the rest of my time on earth I will hear from people who want to talk to me about my father,” Conan continued. “I’ve never met anyone like him, and he happens to be my father. If I happened to meet him in a hotel lobby, I’d think, ‘Who the hell is this guy? He is the most interesting person I have ever met.’
Watching the fluid banter between late-night talk show hosts and their celebrity guests, you might have wondered if the stars know in advance what questions they’ll be asked. Conan’s younger brother, Justinhe remembered his mother’s love of attending reunions. “My mother once said she thought he was enjoying her reunion more than she was. He really loved meeting people and hearing their stories and getting to know them in a very meaningful way,” he told the paper.
A memorial service for both of Conan’s parents will be held in Boston on Wednesday, December 18.
Sad news comes as Conan is preparing to host the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025. It will be the first time he will have a ceremony.
“America asked for it, and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other words, I host the Oscars,” Conan joked in a statement confirming his appointment in November.
“We are thrilled and honored to host the inimitable Conan O’Brien at the Academy Awards this year,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President of the Academy Janet Yang stated in a joint press release. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, love of movies and experience in live television.”
