Fans and promoters say Devin Haney needs to get busy with his career and stop sitting on the sidelines regrouping after his loss last April. He lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia in an upset on April 20 in Brooklyn. That loss appears to have taken something away from the former two-division world champion.
A year on the sidelines
Bill Haney said this week that he has “big news” coming for Devin’s next fight, but he doesn’t give any clues as to who it might be or in what weight class. If Devin moves up to 147, he could fight for a world title against WBC champion Mario Barrios or WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis.
IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is interested in fighting those guys, but he’s been too slow to make fights happen. Bill would act quickly to make this happen if that’s where he wants Devin to go.
Promoter Eddie Hearn feels it is important for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) to return to action, noting that he will have been out of the ring for almost a year when he returns.
That’s not a good thing for Haney, the 26-year-old former two-division world champion, if he wants to stay sharp. Haney is losing a lot of money by sitting out the ring, and he could have already defended against Sandor Martin and fought IBF champion Liam Paro in a unification.
“He needs to get moving.”
“Let’s see what Devin does next. For me, I think it needs to move. He fought in April. Now it’s December. He’s not going to fight in January. He will be out for almost a year when all is said and done,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV about Devin Haney’s inactivity since his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20. “I would like to see Devin back in the ring. “I think he has tremendous talent.”
