Trump vows to end ‘very expensive’ daylight saving time

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he wants to end daylight saving time (DST), arguing that it is “inconvenient” and “very costly” for Americans.

Daylight saving time is the practice of setting the clock forward one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall to make better use of natural light.

According to the Pew Research Center, it is seen in a third of the world’s countries, including most of Europe.

However, some in the United States have long advocated ending this practice, arguing that doing so would lead to brighter evenings and more economic activity.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said daylight saving time had “a small but strong constituency, but it shouldn’t do it.”

He said his Republican Party would work to end it.

It is not the first attempt to alter the practice of changing clocks seasonally in the United States.

In 2022, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bill that would have required the United States to switch to daylight saving time permanently to take advantage of brighter nights, especially for those traveling from work or school.

But the Sunshine Protection Act, introduced by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, never made it to President Joe Biden’s desk.

Rubio, who has since been Trump’s pick for secretary of state under his incoming administration, said at the time that studies had shown that permanent daylight saving time could benefit the economy.
