Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are available a number of new artificial intelligence-powered improvementsincluding the ability to hold a continuous conversation and translate between languages.
Ray-Ban Meta owners in Meta’s early access program for the US and Canada can now download firmware v11, which adds “live AI”. Live AI, which debuted this fall, allows users to continuously chat with Meta’s AI assistant, Meta AI, to refer back to what they’ve discussed earlier in the conversation. Without saying the wake word “Hey, Meta,” users can interrupt the Meta AI to ask additional questions or change the subject.
Live AI also works with real-time video. Wearers can ask questions about what they’re seeing in real-time—what’s around them, for example.
Real-time AI video for Ray-Ban Meta was a major focus of Meta’s Connect dev conference earlier this fall. Posted in response to OpenAIs Advanced Sound mode with Vision and Google Project Astrathe technology allows Meta’s artificial intelligence to answer questions about the glasses’ front-facing camera view.
With Monday’s update, Meta becomes one of the first tech giants to hit the market with real-time AI video on smart glasses. Google recently said it plans to sell AR glasses has similar capabilities, but the company hasn’t committed to a specific timeline.
Meta claims that in the future, living artificial intelligence will even make “helpful suggestions” before the user asks. What kind of suggestions? The company would not say.
Firmware v11 also features live translation, which allows Ray-Ban Meta users to translate speech into English and Spanish, French or Italian in real-time. When the user is talking to someone who speaks one of those languages, they will hear what the speaker is saying in English through the glasses’ open-ear speakers and get a transcript on their paired phone.
The Ray-Ban Meta also has Shazam support in firmware v11. The glasses can say “Hey Meta, Shazam this song” to try to find the tune that’s playing.
Meta warns that new features, especially live AI and live translation, may not always get things right. “We continue to learn what works best and improve the experience for everyone,” the company said blog post.
The last time the Ray-Ban Meta got a major update was in NovemberWhen Meta began rolling out certain AI capabilities to glasses wearers in France, Italy and Spain.
