On Tuesday, Google announced support for third-party tools in Gemini Code Assist, an enterprise-oriented AI code completion service.
Code Assist was launched as a rebrand in April similar service Google offered it under now cancelled Duet AI branding. Code Assist, available through plugins for popular development environments such as VS Code and JetBrains, is powered by Google. Twins AI models that allow you to think and modify large chunks of code.
With the addition of tools that launch in a private preview, Code Assist can capture real-time data and retrieve data from external applications. Google’s director of product management Ryan Salva and group product manager Prithpal Bhogill said the idea is to bring different technologies into the coding environment while minimizing potential distractions.
“This new tooling feature can help remove the friction of context switching,” Salva and Bhogill wrote in a joint blog post. “Getting scalable, secure applications into production requires more than just writing great code—developers need to improve productivity, observability, security, databases, and more. they need solutions for.”
Not just anyone can build a tool for Code Assist. Google limits the app Google Cloud partnersat least for now.
“The tools allow developers to access or act on data from any part of the engineering system—especially useful for services outside the developer environment,” Salva and Bhogill wrote. “For example, you can summarize the latest comments from a Jira issue, find the last person who merged changes to a file in git, or display the latest live site issue from Sentry.”
Code Assist tools from GitLab, GitHub, Sentry.io, Atlassian Rovo, Snyk, and Google’s own Google Docs are available at launch. Google Cloud partners interested in building new tools can contact their partner managers, Salva and Bhogill said.
Code Assist is a direct competitor GitHub’s Copilot Enterpriseoffers extensions It works a lot like the Code Assist tools. But Google has long argued that Code Assist stands out in other ways, such as its support for in-house codebases.
Code Assist saw a number of improvements this year, including the launch of an enterprise plan with code swapping capabilities and customized code suggestions based on private code repositories.
