While Hilary Duff is a mom of four, her biggest parenting hurdle came when she welcomed baby no. 3.
“People lied to me and said once you get to three, once you get past two to three, it’s easy,” Duff, 37, revealed exclusively in the latest issue My Weekly. “Three sent me for a loop. I couldn’t get my feet on the ground all year.”
Duff and husband Matthew Ale tied the knot in December 2019. The actress was already a mother They are Lucanow 12, which she shares with her ex-husband Mike Comrie. Duff and Koma, 37, welcomed their first child together, daughter Banks, in October 2018. they expanded their offspring again in 2021 and 2024 with daughters Mae and Townes.
As Duff has adjusted to being a mother of four, she now has the strength to be flexible and not feel guilty when things aren’t perfect.
“I had four children before I realized I couldn’t control everyone’s happiness and be the cruise director of everything all the time,” she says. “I try my best, but it was a really nice exercise to say no a little bit more.
Of course, this lesson came with practice. Duff says she assumed with her third child they would “do what family does” and be “easy.” However, this was not the case with Mae. According to Duff, Mae likes to “run everything” and has a big “personality.”
“She’s a wild woman, but she has her own ideas,” Duff explains, but adds that she’s “obsessed” with her daughter’s spirit.
“And then obviously we liked her so much we went for number four,” he jokes. “And (it) felt like there was a space, and I’m not sure there is, but we’re figuring it out.”
While Duff has a strong support system alongside her, she also uses tools like Meta AI to help her stay on top of things – especially during the holidays.
“The burden is heavy for mothers. I wake up in the middle of the night and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve got these things that I haven’t done and I’m just driving when you shouldn’t be on the phone. And of course, all the wheels are turning. So I’m slowly but surely getting ready and definitely getting excited. I love the holidays, but being an adult now and making it magical for so many people is just too much,” she says of her partnership with the brand. “So I’ve been using meta AI and it’s been incredible because it’s like a thinking partner. It’s just something to throw your mind around and come up with ideas that maybe feel a little dated to me.”
