During Masked singerSeason 12 finale, Buffalos – now known as Boyz II Men – succeeded where no other group had gone before, becoming the first band to win the Golden Mask trophy, but at first they didn’t think about winning.

“We’ve been called many times… and we decided to do it,” Wanya Morris exclusively speaking My Weekly before the finals on Wednesday 18th December. “Because they called us a few times and we couldn’t do it. So last time we were like, ‘Okay, let’s get this over with so they never call us again.'”

Wanyá, 51, and his bandmates, Nathan Morris (no relation) a Shawn Stockmanthey thought the show would be “good exposure” but didn’t anticipate taking home top honors. Either they’ll guess us or if we disguise our voice, we know they won’t like who we are and we’ll be kicked out,” Wanyá recalled, before Nathan, 53, chimed in: “We were hoping to kick out the first night so we could they could go home!”

“It allowed us to be ourselves, believe it or not,” he explained. “The masks allowed us to reveal things about who we are as singers, who we are as people, music lovers, because a lot of people wouldn’t associate Boyz II Men with Toto or any of the other songs we’ve done on the show, so it was nice for people to see of our playlists, songs and music we love, from artists that in some cases have entertained us since childhood. So it was nice and it was deeper than just winning the whole thing.”

The boys even choked on stage during the final, which Wanyá attributed to the unusual circumstances of the competition Masked singer as well as realizing that filming the show brought them closer together.

“What got us more emotional than anything else was the fact that we overcame a situation that most people would recoil from. It was really hot in those suits and we didn’t know if we would be able to pull off performances like (in the final) from the start,” he explained. “It felt like we were a new band to me. And we were accepted as good singers, as good performers, and we weren’t even human. … We were all Buffalo, you know what I mean? Even though we are individuals, we all embodied the same character and overcame every obstacle, dehydration, overcame anxiety. We overcame everything and sang our hearts out to people.”

Shawn agreed, adding, “We just realized that we still have the energy that we’ve always had (since) 33. Sometimes in any relationship you tend to take the momentum you’ve been building for granted, and this made us refocus. It made us remember why we did it in the first place.”

Boyz II Men have no plans to slow down in the new year with tour dates booked through July.

“A lot of people use the word ‘relevant’ in their own terms, and we feel like we’re relevant to each other, and that’s more important to us than anything else,” Nathan said. “And if we understand each other, we’ll be able to follow what everyone else is doing. And there’s a lot to come.”
