Bill Haney says he wants Gervonta Davis as Devin Haney’s next replacement after Tank defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on March 1.
If Bill gets his wish, Devin will come out of a long layoff to fight Tank (30-0, 28 KOs). Maybe I have to go down to 135 or a catch weight of 137.
The contest would be perceived as a cash grab for Haney, 26, who is coming off a loss and likely has an all-time low in self-confidence. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) hasn’t fought since losing to Ryan Garcia on April 20, and Bill says Dev will stay out of the ring for a year before fighting again.
“We are not going to accept sex. Tank Davis when he finished with Lamont Roach. How about that? Bill Haney told Knockoutboxing86 TV, when asked who Devin Haney will fight next.
it’s hard to say the reasons behind Bill Haney mentioning Tank Davis’ name as the guy he wants Devin to fight next. It could be one of these reasons:
A. Clout seeks to make Devin’s name the center of attention
B. Withdraw money on a big payday before retirement
C. Believing Devin can win
D. Career revival at 135 against smaller fighters
Haney could reinvent himself by returning to 135 and using his enormous size for that division, as he had done before moving up to 140 in 2023.
Keyshawn Davis, a massive 135 with the build of a welterweight (147), is getting his way by moving up to lightweight to feast on smaller fighters. If Keyshawn could do it, Haney could join the party, rejuvenate his career and get that big payday against Tank Davis.
Devin will have to make a quick move because Tank seems serious about retiring after three more fights in 2025. He has made a lot of money in his career and no longer seems interested in fighting beyond next year.
The loss to Ryan appears to have undermined Haney’s ambition. The two-division world champion has done nothing since being beaten by Kingry last April.
