Aidan Turner he caught everyone’s attention as he undressed Rivals — and now he’s breaking down why he wanted Declan’s body to look authentic on screen.
“He’s a dad and he’s a journalist, so I think it would be a little weird (for him to look too sculpted),” Turner, 41, exclusively said. My Weekly about his approach those shirtless scenes. “I’ve often seen actors in movies or TV shows where their character’s job didn’t necessarily require them to be (very nice). So you see them naked and you’re like, “Wait a minute, I know what that means. I know the classes, diets and strenuous physical activity. I know you don’t have time for that.'”
Turner didn’t want fans to wonder if Declan’s the look was too perfect after seeing him at his most imaginative Poldark.
“I didn’t want it to be one of those moments where it’s just a TV body. I want it to be real,” he noted. “I tend to keep myself in shape. So the pressure was all me. And we were really lucky because we had these amazing intimacy coordinators (for the show’s NSFW scenes).
He continued: “Our concern is to get hit. But I definitely think most of my peers on this show aren’t really very confident. Let’s just get down to it. We knew what we were getting into. If you log into a Jilly Cooper show, you know what world you’re entering. Sex is part of it, and if there is more, there will be more.”
According to the British author Cooper the novel of the same nameDisney+ and Hulu’s Rivals revolves around a dispute between two men fighting for control of a television station in 1980s Britain. Rivals stars an ensemble cast that includes Turner, Cast: David Tennant, Alex Hassell, Bella MacLean, Nafessa Williams, Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer.
“It’s always lovely (to hear how well the show and Declan are being received). Any actor who says they don’t want to hear nice things like that, I don’t believe it. It’s always nice to hear those things, especially in the early days of a show,” Turner said Our about the positive reception of the program. “I knew how it was received in this country (the UK) which was really positive.”
Now that Rivals was restored for Season 2, Turner is excited to give the fans what they want.
“When you do a piece of work in 20 years, a funny thing happens. Some things you land the plane and some you miss the airport completely,” he joked. “When you land a plane, you start hearing people you haven’t heard from in a while.” My friends who I haven’t talked to in months just emailed me saying they love the show. And it’s like, ‘Wow, that must really touch people.
Turner, who isn’t on social media himself, but heard about the buzz secondhand, feels great gratitude for the support shown, adding: “But not having the social media element, it keeps you very much out of the loop. But I’m glad to hear it’s being received on a really positive level. … I guess to some extent it’s always still a surprise when people respond to the show and really like it.”
He concluded: “Being an actor there are a lot of disappointments and some shows that you think will travel but don’t – and you’re confused. I just gave up years ago trying to figure out what the business wants and what the markets are picking. So it’s so lovely to hear you say these things (about the support). It puts a real smile on my face.”
Rivals currently streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally.
