The holiday season often devolves into a major argument, and we’re not talking about the one your weird uncle starts after having too much eggnog. No, it’s the debate to end all debates: whether or not a certain action classic is a Christmas movie. At this point, though, the haters have to admit it Die Hard is a holiday classic, and if you doubt that indisputable fact, free streaming on Tubi will surely change your mind.

Die Hard is a true cinematic masterpiece and earned its reputation as such long before the advent of streaming. The plot is beautifully fluid: a New York detective heads to Los Angeles to rekindle the spark with his estranged wife, and this brings him to Nakatomi Tower, where he enjoys a Christmas party with his co-workers. But when mysterious villains take over the tower, the ex-detective finds there’s no time for love as he becomes a one-man army to take on a legion of twitchy terrorists.

When you look Die Hard you’ll see some very familiar faces on the stream, including the late great Alan Rickman as terrorist leader Hans Gruber. And for movie lovers of a certain age, it’s always great fun to see Reginald VelJohnson Family matters a patriarch who just can’t escape playing iconic on-screen cops. But no one shines in this film more than Bruce Willis: casting him was a studio risk that paid off, transforming the TV actor best known for the hit series. Moonlight into one of the most famous movie stars in the entire world.

If you hesitate to give Die Hard for tonight streaming festivities, you’re probably wondering what makes this movie so great. The short answer is that it combines killer action scenes with very clever storytelling, and it’s rewarding to see our protagonist and villain equally able to surprise each other (not to mention the audience). The film is full of quotable dialogue, but never becomes a parody of itself, and that’s in the post-Avengers (or maybe we should say the post “well, that it just happened!”) world.

We are not the only ones who love Die Hardeither: if you’re still on the fence about streaming on Tubi, you should know that the film has an incredibly impressive 94 percent critical score on Rotten tomatoes. Furthermore, this Bruce Willis classic also has a 94% viewership rating, proving that it was a huge hit with almost everyone. This popularity helped the $25-$35 million film earn about $140 million at the box office, kicking off a whole series of sequels.

To be honest, these sequels offered less and less of a return, and your enjoyment of the later entries will mostly be about how much you enjoy seeing Willis perform his charismatic action routine. But first Die Hard is a famous classic for a reason and free streaming on Tubi will always be a better alternative than sipping on the latest streaming Netflix. As an added bonus, the movie’s holiday setting gives you the perfect excuse to put it on when you’re wrapping presents or just leaving milk and cookies for Santa.

Can you find? Die Hard will it live up to the hype after streaming, or will its action plot feel a bit dated? You won’t know until you check it out on Tubi. Streaming on this platform is completely free, and that’s the kind of price that always makes us channel our inner Willis while yelling, “Yippee ki‐yay.”
