Asia-Pacific shares rise ahead of holidays


While the holiday spirit will dominate the news agenda, there are notable developments around the world, as the three defining themes of 2024 – elections, war and inflation – continue to hum in the background.

On Tuesday, the president-elect of Moldova Maia Sandu will attend his inauguration. His narrow electoral victory in October, despite allegations of Russian interference, will put the former Soviet country on the path to EU membership.

Georgia, on the other hand, on Sunday will swear in Mikheil Kavelashvili to the presidency, a pro-Russian coup and Croatia will hold its first presidential election on Sunday.

On Monday, Mozambique’s high court is poised to rule on the country’s disputed October elections, as opposition parties in Albania blocked roads demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda will deliver a speech on Christmas Day. Economists will be looking to his words for clues on how president-elect Donald Trump’s tariffs will affect the pace and path of monetary policy.

UK GDP figures for the third quarter will come out on Monday, after months of disappointing economic releases for chancellor Rachel Reeves.
