Lightweight prospect Curmel Moton will reportedly fight on the David Benavidez vs. David Morrell on February 1 in 40 days on PBC on Prime Video PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The undefeated 18-year-old Moton’s opponent and the rest of the card have yet to be announced. It probably won’t be a notable name for Moton, since he’s still a teenager and is VERY carefully matched by his promoter.
It will be interesting to see which division the 5’4″ Moton (6-0, 5 KOs) will fight in for this contest. He weighed 139 3/4 pounds in his last fight against Hilario Martínez Moreno on October 12 in Philadelphia. That Moton already has weight problems at age 18 suggests that he will soon reach welterweight and be food for the monsters of that division.
Although Moton destroyed Moreno in the first round, his overweight status, near the 140-pound limit, is a warning sign that he could soon be forced to move up to light welterweight. At 5’4″, Moton is undersized for that division and will have trouble against taller fighters. It’s built like a square shaped fire hydrant and you can tell by looking at it that it’s going to have problems if it goes up to 140 or higher.
Moton is one of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s protégés, and is expected to take him slowly like he did with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, feeding him soft edibles. to build a record to create a source of income.
If Moton follows the same script as Tank, he may never have a 50-50 fight until the end of his career, when he’s 30 years old. Tank has yet to be 50-50 and has been in the professional game for 11 years. So what does that tell you about how Moton will come on board? You might think that Moton won’t be brought in as Tank, but he certainly will.
