There has always been something funny about the world of technology Wallace and Gromit— where Wallace’s nonsensical inventions, from literal spaceships to remote-controlled robot pants, sit alongside a classically understated British landscape. And so it was to create Wallace and Gromit At Aardman, too, the studio’s traditional hand-animated properties prevailed, even as it dipped into CGI assistants and full 3D projects throughout its long history. With the return of Aardman Wallace and Gromit with on the horizon for the first time in 16 years Revenge Most Birdyou can take a look how the studio is balanced both traditional and modern in this little snippet from the film’s new art book.
Out December 31 from Titan Books, The Art of Wallace and Gromit: Most Revenge birdIt was written by Richard Hansom, the development producer of the previous program Wallace and Gromit TV movie The Matter of Bread and Death— takes you behind the scenes of the development process for Aardman’s long-awaited comeback his most iconic creationcovers the return Wrong Pants‘ series of interviews with beloved villain Feathers McGraw and more cast and crew, and tons of behind-the-scenes insight into the making of the film, from early concept art to Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park himself, to shots showcasing the legions of clay models created for the film.
You will also be able to see more of how it is Revenge Most Bird Aardman has seen more technology added to its production pipeline, such as 3D-printed rapid prototyping mockups, in our exclusive spreads in the book below (don’t forget to click to see them in full size!). It’s an effect that animators could have completely replicated simply in post-production VFX, but as you can see in the spread above, animator Sean Gregory went for an in-camera effect instead: a miniature model-scale projector illuminated the scene. Play an animated code graphics file that can be defined by drawing stop-motion elements. A fitting blend of computer and hand animation that even Wallace would be impressed with!
