At least three dead in bus accident in Norway

At least three people have died in a bus accident in Norway, according to police.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 GMT) in the Hadsel district, on the northwest coast of the country.

The bus went off the road and partially ended up in Lake Åsvatnet, authorities said in a news release.

It is believed to be carrying 58 people at the time of the crash, many of whom police say are foreign nationals.

In addition to the deaths, police said four people were seriously injured.

Three people were taken to Stokmarknes hospital by rescue helicopter, while other passengers were taken to a nearby school.

According to local media, everyone has already been removed from the vehicle.

The Norwegian Red Cross said on social media it was sending teams to help with a “serious bus accident” on the E10 road.

Firefighters, ambulances and police teams are also working at the site.

There have been reports of heavy snowdrifts and strong winds in the area, which has made rescue efforts difficult.

Public broadcaster NRK reported that the bus was traveling from the city of Narvik to the Lofoten archipelago.

The mayor of the nearby Vågan district, Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, said a “crisis team” had been set up and a local hotel had been allocated for relatives and as a reception centre.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the accident was “a very serious situation” and his thoughts were with all those affected.
