Airstrikes have been reported in two cities in Yemen.
Witnesses and Houthi rebels said the country’s main international airport and a military base were attacked in the capital Sanaa, while a power plant in the western port city of Hudaydah was also attacked, the AFP news agency reported.
Israel said it carried out the strikes and that its air force had attacked Houthi “military infrastructure.”
Houthi-run Yemeni broadcaster Al Masirah reported that three people were killed in the attacks and 11 others were wounded.
Two of them reportedly died at Sanaa airport and the other at Ras Issa port.
It is unclear whether they were civilians or Houthi rebels.
“(Israeli) fighter jets carried out intelligence-based strikes against military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime on the western coast and interior of Yemen,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was at Sana’a airport at the time of the attack.
“As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment,” he wrote in X.
“A crew member of our plane was injured. At least two people died at the airport.”
Iran described the attacks as a “clear violation of international peace and security.”
Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel since the first months of the Gaza war, which began in October 2023.
A Houthi missile attack injured more than a dozen people in Israel last week.
Israel has carried out intermittent attacks against the Houthis in retaliation.
Earlier this week, Israel’s defense minister said the country was preparing to “strike hard” on the Houthis, warning that this would “decapitate” the group’s leaders.
The Houthis are an armed political and religious group backed by Iran. The group has ruled much of western Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since it overthrew the internationally recognized government in 2015.
