ChatGPT, Sora and OpenAI’s developer-facing API were down for more than four hours on Thursday. OpenAI says it began experiencing a major outage at 11:00 a.m. PT, but now says its services are slowly coming back online as of 3:16 p.m. PT. Frequent users of ChatGPT may remember this service it went down earlier this month also.
TechCrunch received error messages when trying to log into ChatGPT and Sora on Thursday afternoon.
On it status pageOpenAI says the major outage was caused by one of their upstream providers, but did not provide further details. As of 2:05 PM PT, OpenAI said ChatGPT has been partially restored, but users may still experience problems downloading their chat history. At 3:16 p.m., Sora was back in action. The company says it is actively working on a full fix for ChatGPT and its API.
This is the second time that OpenAI’s family of services has been downgraded during the month of December. When this happened two weeks ago, OpenAI attributed the outage to a new telemetry service gone wrong. This outage lasted about 6 hours, an unusually long outage. Typically, these outages only last an hour or two.
Popular services using OpenAI’s API, e.g Confusion and Siri Apple Intelligence According to the companies’ respective status pages and TechCrunch’s testing, the integration was not affected by the outage.
