Wicked: For Goodthe second installment of the popular movie musical, will feature brand new music that deviates from the original production.
“I collaborated on one of the new songs and it’s so special to me,” Cynthia Erivo he said Variety on the Thursday, December 26 episode of the “Award Chatter” podcast. “The whole crew was in tears when we were shooting it. I hope the audience is ready – it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.”
Evilwhich hit theaters last month, was adapted from Stephen SchwartzBroadway musical of the same name. Both shows serve as a prequel to The Wizard of Ozbased on Gregory Maguirea novel in which the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North are roommates at the fictional Shiz University.
He played the lead role in the musical OG Idina Menzelová and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, respectively. In the long-awaited film version Erivo, 37, and Ariana Grande took over the roles.
Wicked: For Good is ready to continue the story where Part one interrupted but with a more mature tone.
“We’re going to dive deeper into the consequences of the characters’ decisions,” Erivo said Variety. “The story is richer and the stakes are higher. It’s not just a sequel; it’s a transformation.”
While Elphie eventually becomes a notorious Ozian villain, Erivo does not see the character as “purely” evil.
“Elphaba is not evil. None of the characters are purely good or bad. They are flawed, complex and human,” Erivo pointed out to the outlet. “This story asks us to rethink the labels we give to others and ourselves. It’s about empathy and understanding. The world needs more of that right now.”
Erivo and Grande, 31, are both nominated for a Golden Globe for theirs Evil roles, albeit in different categories. (Erivo is nominated for lead actress in a musical/comedy, while Grande was nominated for supporting actress in a musical/comedy.)
“Oh my god, oh my god,” Grande gushed on her Instagram story earlier this month. “Excited and honored to be recognized by the members of the @goldenglobes. Crying (of course). It’s impossible to find my words, but I’m just so deeply grateful for this recognition.”
She added: “Congratulations to my wonderful dear sister @cynthiaerivo and all our Oziano family on this celebration of our work. I cannot express my gratitude.”
