JonBenét Ramseyfather, John Ramseyshe still believes there is a chance her murder will be solved nearly three decades later after a DNA breakthrough.
“We are encouraged that the police will finally use the skills and resources of the FBI to help solve our case,” said John, 81. Sun USA on Thursday, December 26, the 28th anniversary of JonBenét’s death.
John plans to sit down with the new Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn about the case. Specifically, they will discuss recruiting the FBI to help a using new DNA testing narrow down their list of suspects.
“Suppose they now use top DNA labs to create a DNA profile in the correct format for family genealogy research,” noted John. “In that case, we have a pretty good chance of finding the killer’s identity.

John and Redfearn are expected to meet in January to discuss the assistance of advanced forensics experts, they say Today. DNA profiling involving genealogical work has proven successful in the past in high-profile cases such as the Golden State Killer case.
Renewed interest in JonBenét’s case comes after Netflix released their three-part documents Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey. JonBenét was found dead at the age of 6 in 1996 in the basement of her home, hours after she was reported missing. Her official cause of death was asphyxiation by suffocation associated with craniocerebral trauma, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Boulder police have investigated many suspects and theories over the years, including her brother, Burke Ramseyand JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John. Grand Jury voted to indict the pair in 1999, but an indictment was never signed by the Boulder district attorney due to a lack of evidence. The couple was acquitted in 2008 and he continued to defend himself to find JonBenét’s killer. (Patsy died of ovarian cancer in 2006.)
“What we’re advocating — and we’ve been doing for about the last year, aggressively, is that we know five or six items were taken from the crime scene.” They were sent to the lab for DNA samples and they were not taken,” John told the camera in the three-part documentary. “We want these items removed. We want what was taken away to be tested again. Then, use a public genealogy database to search—not just for a match—but for a similar relative. This has been used with great success by police departments in the past few years to find the killer of very old cold cases.”

A Boulder PD spokesperson said My Weekly in a statement in November that they were “aggressively investigating the case and pursuing all avenues.” Meanwhile, a source connected to the authorities shared with Our that “fresh eyes” are being focused on the case in an effort to find “anything that could be overlooked.”
“No one is off the table. This case is still wide open,” the insider noted. “We are concerned with the truth, whatever it may be. We leave no stone unturned. The kindest thing we can do for the Ramseys is to sort this out.”
