Justin Baldoni and Gina Rodriguez evolved from on-screen love interests to best friends.
The duo met on set Jane the Virginwhich premiered on the CW in 2014. Based on the Venezuelan soap opera, Jane the Virgin starred Rodriguez as a devotee virgin Jane who became pregnant after accidental artificial insemination by her gynecologist while Baldoni played Rafael aka the father of her child.
Before Jane the Virgin ended five seasons later, Baldoni reflects on the impact the show was on his life.
“What a magical experience @cwjanethevirgin was. Even from the audition there was something so special/magical about it,” he wrote via Instagram in 2019. “It’s a longer story for another time, but from the beginning (actually before the official start) we set our intention to serve our work. Love @hereisgina – so proud of all the bad-ass magic she’s creating right now.”
Baldoni he went on to praise Rodriguez as a scene partner and in a separate post adds: “So proud of my soul sister @hereisgina. I’ve watched her create magic for the last five years, I’ve seen her work hard on and off screen to create change and make a difference.”
He continued: “Business between sets, love and respect for crew and family, 14-hour days and weekend press, fighting for representation and making sure we always cast and hire the marginalized and underrepresented.” She’s so full of love and talent and I’m damn proud to call her a friend.”
Rodriguez he was equally proud of Baldoni in the midst of his success as a director and producer. “Justin is also one of my closest friends and we talk all the time,” she exclusively said My Weekly in August 2024.
