“All of you, me and Tyler (Ward) they’re expecting a baby girl,” Russell, 25, said during a recent shoot “I Got It From My Mom” podcast. “I’m so excited.
Ward, 40, immediately ran to the stage rub Russell’s belly before taking his place in the crowd.
“Straight out american idol, I didn’t know,” said Russell, who was a season 22 finalist. “So that was the journey. I am so excited and looking forward.”
Russell was joined by her mother, Patsyin an episode that also teased her reaction to news of her daughter’s pregnancy.
“I’ve always said it’s ‘Emmy and Tyler having a baby,’ because they both have to go through this,” Patsy said. “It’s so true. I keep sending Tyler memes of these girls and I’m like, ‘I can’t wear anything, I’m fat.'”
While Russell and Ward did not make much of their relationship public, he was instrumental in it Idol way.
“I feel that distinct voice, ‘You’ve got a job to do,’ and I think it was out there as well. I was so tired of listening to that inner voice constantly criticizing myself,” explained Russell, who tried out for the singing competition without telling her mother. “I just said, ‘I want to prove everybody wrong.’ … Everyone thought, ‘She probably won’t do it.’
She added: “I remember just looking at Tyler and being like, ‘I’m going to do this and I’m not going to hide anymore.’ I remember when MeeMaw died and we had to be alone with her, me remember you held her handas well as, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to do something with my gift.’ It was almost like an eerie praise that I was doing.’
Russell then recalled Lynn telling her, “God, he doesn’t give a plumber tools not to use them.” (Lynn died in 2022 at the age of 90.)
“She always said, ‘He gave you a present. You’ve got to use it.’
Russell audition for Idol featuring a piano rendition of an original song titled “Skinny” co-written with Ward.
“I released the song with Song House, and Tyler actually runs Song House,” she said. He said, ‘You have to do it. We’ve got to release that song.” Then when I saw all the feedback, I was like, ‘This is bigger than me. I’ve got to get out of the way.’ … His release (was) strange.’
