Lyft says San Francisco paid it $100 million in taxes


Lyft is suing the city of San Francisco the city unfairly paid more than $100 million in taxesBloomberg reports. The lawsuit alleges that for five years, San Francisco unfairly recorded money earned by Lyft drivers as company income.

In the complaint, Lyft claims its drivers are its customers, not its employees. “Accordingly, Lyft recognizes its rideshare revenue as consisting of fees paid by drivers to Lyft, not fees paid by drivers to drivers,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit is the latest chapter in a years-long dispute over how major economy apps should classify drivers. Last summer, Lyft, Uber and DoorDash The California Supreme Court won after upholding Proposition 22it allows companies to classify drivers as independent contractors, meaning companies do not have to pay drivers full employee benefits.
