Halloween may be in the mirror, but the wacky horror comedy has been part of Netflix’s top ten for most of December, and it might just be the weirdest success story of the month. The dead don’t die not a straightforward zombie comedy shaun of the dead and it can go even further than an absurd zombie movie Fido with twists you can’t see coming. Granted, they’re impossible because director Jim Jarmusch upends everything expected of a typical zombie movie and replaces it with the kind of bitter, sardonic black comedy you don’t expect from such a star-studded cast.
I will try to describe the actual plot The dead don’t die it is futile. It starts off pretty normal, with two police officers investigating a missing animal report and then start noticing strange things, like how the watch suddenly stopped working. Background messages hint at what’s going on before the zombies start rising from the ground and feasting on the living residents of Centerville.
From that simple beginning, The dead don’t die quickly spirals out of control and breaks the fourth wall for one brief, well-deserved hysterical moment. Two Centerville officers, Cliff and Ronnie, are played by Bill Murray and Adam the driverin a movie pairing that I never knew I needed to see before this movie, but now consider one of the greatest cross-generational pairings of all time. Regardless of what’s going on around them, Murray and Driver maintain the same deadpan delivery from start to finish, like how Farmer Miller doesn’t deserve to be warned about zombies or how close Ronnie is to Mexicans.
The dead don’t die he’s well aware of zombie movie tropes and expects the viewer to be as well, which makes the seeming checklist of every trope throughout the film and how it’s subverted all the more satisfying. Normally, you’d look for the most famous person in the cast and assume they’d be perfectly fine, but the cast is stacked from top to bottom; in addition to Murray and Driver, you will also recognize Danny Glover, Austin Butler, Selena Gomez, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve BuscemiRosie Perez and Carol Kane. For music fans, the incredible line-up includes Iggy Pop, RZA, Sturgill Simpson and Tom Waits.
Netflix’s top ten usually includes the latest original movie that’s pushed hard by the algorithm, one or two major releases, and usually a seasonal movie. What it usually doesn’t feature, and especially isn’t in the top five for more than a week, is a movie like The dead don’t die that would be described as “weird” by your average moviegoer. The reason I mention the fourth wall break is because it’s not even the weirdest thing that happens during the movie, and after re-watching it I’m even more amazed that it’s enjoying such a surge in popularity because it means there’s hope that average Netflix the subscriber has really good taste.
The dead don’t die is an easy recommendation for anyone who’s seen more than one zombie movie, or if you want to watch something that dares to be different, takes risks, and is the exact opposite of the seemingly focus group-designed movies that have plagued theaters for the past decade. . A zombie movie by Bill Murray and Adam Driver won’t make you scream in horror, but it will make you laugh, and a few kills may make you cringe, but it will surprise you.
