It’s hilarious that almost all the third-party integrations the company has launched — DoorDash, Uber, Midjourney, etc. – is being retired, so these features don’t work. (They actually used to work.) The scroll wheel is less snappy and the interface improvements are welcome. For example, you can now press and hold the push-to-talk button and scroll up or down to change the volume.
There have been many updates to R1 over the year, but three stand out: Beta Rabbit, LAM Playground, and Teach Mode.
Beta Rabbit uses advanced large language models for a more conversational experience when you ask R1 something. I didn’t find it all that conversational GPT-4o or Gemini Live. I asked him what we knew about the early years of the universe, and he began reading a passage. At one point he mentioned “cosmic microwave background”, at which point I cut him off and asked how it was detected. R1 then launched into tirades like “Looking for the cosmic microwave background,” “We’re looking for this,” and “We’re looking for that.” After five of these, he finally started reading the answer about CMBs.
LAM Playground is an interesting feature available on the Rabbit web portal. These “large action models” run in a virtual browser that you can interact with, and are mainly designed to demonstrate how Rabbit can perform tasks on your behalf. (You know, because it couldn’t do that when it was launched!) Enter a command and the Rabbit bots will execute it. For example, you can ask it to find a product and add it to your Amazon cart, although you have to log into Amazon through this virtual browser, which seems like a huge privacy risk.
I asked him to Google “best office chair” and then take me to the retailer’s website. It took too long to do and wrote “best office chair reviews 2023”. (Is R1 in a different timeline?) While the LAM Playground lets you see how it all works, the Tutorial Mode lets you put it to work. It’s still in beta (I’d argue that R1 is still in beta). After several attempts, I kept getting an error that made the function unusable. It finally worked on a different day. I created a tutorial and then ran the steps in a virtual browser – R1 records every click. Then when I told my R1 device to do a move, it mimicked my movements.
