South Korea voted to remove its acting president Han Duck-soo, two weeks after parliament voted to remove its president Yoon Suk Yeol.
There were noisy scenes in the National Assembly after the president announced that only 151 votes out of 300 would be needed to pass the impeachment bill, as opposed to the 200 votes needed to remove President Yoon.
Lawmakers from Yoon and Han’s ruling PPP party crowded around the president’s chair in protest and boycotted the vote.
A total of 192 lawmakers voted in favor of Han’s impeachment.
Prime Minister Han took office after Parliament impeached President Yoon following his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3.
But opposition parliamentarians have accused Han of refusing to appoint judges for Yoon’s impeachment trial, effectively paralyzing the process.
Han agreed to step aside, meaning the country’s Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will become acting president.
