UK Starmer calls on authorities to prioritize economic growth, Sky reports via Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on national regulators, including the financial and competition watchdog, to remove barriers to growth in a bid to revive the sluggish economy, Sky News reported on Saturday.

Starmer wrote to more than a dozen regulators – including the Financial Conduct Authority, the Competition and Markets Authority and energy and water regulators Ofgem and Ofwat – on Tuesday, asking them to present pro-growth initiatives to Downing Street in mid-January, Sky said.

It quoted one person who received the letter, which was also signed by the finance minister, Rachel Reeves, as saying there was no confusion about prioritizing economic growth and investment.

Sky said the Financial Reporting Council, Ofcom’s information regulator, the Environment Agency and healthcare regulators have also received the letter.

Downing Street did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

Official figures last week showed Britain’s economy failed to grow during the first three months of Starmer’s new government, adding to signs of recession.

Business groups also said that the government’s budget to raise taxes on Oct. 30 will make it difficult for companies to invest and hire workers in the short term.
