David Nyika has been using daily affirmations to stay focused on his task of destroying IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia in their January 8 fight.
Nyika (10-0, 9 KOs) has vowed to physically overpower Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) and knock him out in their main card, live on DAZN at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach, in Queensland, Australia .
There are 13 days left until two powerful punchers meet, and Nyika is ready to take the IBF crown off Opetaia’s head to expose him.
Obadiah’s vulnerability
The boxing public already saw how vulnerable Opetaia is in her recent rematch against Mairis Briedis on May 18. When things were going well at the beginning of that fight, Jai seemed invincible, but things completely changed when Briedis pressured the Australian, attacking relentlessly in the second half of the fight.
Once she saw his blood, Opetaia mentally broke down, looking scared. Watching Briedis put Opetaia, who seems like a bully, in his place was a revelation. You could see the fear in Opetaia’s eyes.
Nyika will surely have seen the mental weakness in Opetaia and will attack him like a shark, not letting him perform as he normally does against the lesser fighters his promoters have pitted him against. Nyika’s hitting power is similar to Briedis, and the aggressive style is also on the same level. It’s kryptonite for Opetaia.
“I am prepared for anything. I don’t even know what I’m doing in the gym. They tell me how many times I have to be here,” said Jai Opetaia to the TCB Network. “I train at 9:30, 11:00 and 4:30 every day. I don’t even know what I’m doing. I only know how many times I have to be here, and whatever they throw at me, I do the best I can.
“I don’t follow a routine because if the routine doesn’t happen, then what? I’ve gotten into fights before and didn’t even warm up. I wrapped my hands and walked out directly. These are things you have to be prepared for,” Opetaia said.
