At least 28 dead after plane crashes in South Korea

A plane carrying 181 people crashed at a South Korean airport, killing at least 28 people, Yonhap news agency reports.

The plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a wall at Muan International Airport, in the southwest of the country, the South Korean news agency reports.

The Jeju Air plane, carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants, was reportedly returning from Bangkok, Thailand, and the accident occurred while landing.

According to Yonhap, one person has been found alive as the rescue mission continues.

Emergency services were trying to rescue people in the tail section of the plane, an airport official told Reuters news agency.

The cause of the accident is unclear, but a bird strike may have caused the landing gear to malfunction, Yonhap reports.
