Downsizing co-creator Bill Lawrence exposed Michael J. Fox was involved in shaping the portrayal of Parkinson’s disease.
“It’s great to be able to write about things that matter to you now,” Lawrence, 56, said People in an interview published on Saturday, December 28. “And Michael J. Fox is my first mentor. So we wanted to portray that in, hopefully, an inspirational way and not a sad or tragic way.
Fox, 63, played in Spin City, the first show Lawrence co-createdfrom 1996 to 2002. The actor revealed his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease during the series’ 1998 broadcast.
For DownsizingLawrence said in the upcoming season 3 series that he became “obsessed with showing a portrait of life with him”.
“I found the first mentor in my life and career, Michael J. Fox, who was so inspiring in the way he took it in stride and continues to work harder than anyone I know,” he said. “And if we can, we want to bring that spirit to the show.”
Lawrence shared that he and the co-creator Brett Goldstein they have a “deep history” with Parkinson’s disease, as both their fathers battle the disease. Lawrence noted that he “generally attacked difficult situations with comedy in his real life”.
“As a writer, it takes you a while to figure out what your voice is—I think mine is hopeful and optimistic by nature,” he said. “I soak up the inspiring people around me and steal them as much as I can.”
Downsizing stars Jason Segel as Jimmy Laird, a therapist grieving the death of his wife. Struggling to move forward, she throws herself into her work—where she is works with a senior therapist Dr. Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Ford told the paper earlier this month takes over his plot — and the responsibility that comes with it — “deadly serious.”
“There are people who absorb these kinds of experiences with grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom,” Ford, 82, said in a Dec. 12 interview. “I just want to say that she’s a person especially equipped to communicate what it’s like, and I think that’s worth sharing with our audience.”
Ford commented that it felt like he was “telling a story”, adding: “The story I’m telling is a story I know, so I can just feel it.”
Downsizing season 2 is now streaming on AppleTV+.
