Matthew Gaudreau and his wife Madeline Gaudreauthey were together for almost 15 years — and three husbands — before his premature death.
“The best 14 years of my life 🤍 I will cherish those years and you for the rest of my life,” Madeline wrote via Instagram in September 2024 days after her husband and his brother, Johnny Gaudreau, they were both killed.
On August 30, news broke that Matthew and his older brother, NHL player Johnny, were hit by a vehicle in New Jersey while riding their bikes. They were 29 and 31. The siblings were in town to serve as bachelors in their sister’s Katiewedding.
“I want you to come home,” Madeline, who is pregnant with her and Matthew’s first child, she wrote via her Instagram Story in September 2024. “I miss you so much and love you so much baby.”

Matthew and Madeline started dating when they were teenagers.
The duo celebrated Matthew’s birthday in New York. “Happy ((22)) Birthday!! my love My most loyal friend,” Madeline blurted out in her Tribute to Instagram. “His company is something I never get tired of. A year older and a year wiser. My admiration and gratitude for you is so deep. Today && Forever I love you. ❤️.”
“Happy 4 years to this beautiful woman,” Matthew wrote through social media. “I wouldn’t be the man I am today without you. I love you always.”

The pair revealed via social media that they are officially “pawrens” after they got their first dog together.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Grenada the summer after their wedding and shared it beach photos online.
Madeline announced via Instagram that she is pregnant with the couple’s first child, due in December.
Matthew and Johnny were killed on August 29 while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Our confirmed that the man was driving the vehicle that hit the siblings suspected of drunkenness. The driver was arrested after the accident and charged with murder.
Johnny and Matthew are survived by their parents, Guy and Janeand sisters Katie and Kristen. Additionally, Johnny, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, is survived by his wife, Meredithand their two childrenNoah and Johnny Jr.
Matthew, who played hockey in college and then in the minor leagues, is survived by his wife and unborn child.
“It was always Matty & John. I can’t even put into words the bond these two had and I don’t have the strength to right now. They were each other’s biggest cheerleaders,” Madeline he wrote via an Instagram tribute about her late husband and his brother. “Matt looked up to John in many ways, but the most important was the father he was to Noa and Johnny. I feel extreme comfort in knowing that they are together, as they always have been. I know they’re still messing around up there and they’ll continue to take care of their families.”
Madeline shared her sister-in-law Meredith’s message about their “extreme heartbreak and terrible bond” following their husbands’ deaths.
“Boys could not have chosen a stronger woman (sic) for wives and mothers of their children. We’ll make it through every season… the way guys would for each other,” she continued. “They have blessed us with children… through them we will have a part of them on earth with us forever. I love you my beautiful husband, I love you John, I love you Meredith, I love you Noah, I love you Johnny, and I love you baby Tripp.”
Madeline welcomed their first childTripp, in December 2024. “Tripp Matthew 🤍🦋,” Madeline wrote on Instagram at the time. “Mommy and Daddy’s World.” She included a picture of her holding the newborn’s hand next to a small sign that read: “He’s here.”
