Matthew’s wife, Madeline, announced the birth of the couple’s first childTripp, via Instagram on Sunday, Dec. 29, four months after her husband’s death.
Katie reshared Madeline’s post via her Instagram Stories Sunday, writing: “Truly speechless.” She also reshared and post of the North American Hockey League’s Philadelphia Rebels is celebrating the arrival of baby Tripp. (Matthew, who was 29, was a former assistant coach for the team.)
“Tripp Matthew 🤍🦋,” Madeline wrote via Instagram on Sunday, welcoming a newborn. “Mommy and Daddy’s World.” The post included a picture of Madeline holding the newborn’s tiny hand, along with a small caption that read, “He’s here.” She also tagged Matthew in the post.
Matthew and his brother, NHL star Johnny (who was 31), they were hit and killed from a suspected drunk driver cycling near their hometown in New Jersey on August 29, just one day before Katie’s planned wedding. The brothers were expected to be bachelors at the ceremony.
According to Katie’s wedding website, she and her fiance, Devin Joycewill now consider July 11, 2025in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Shortly after her brothers death, Katie had a second thought learn about news as she made final preparations to walk down the aisle.
“The day,” Katie wrote via Instagram on September 5. “Right in the middle of preparing for the best day of my life, the unthinkable happens that will change my life forever. I remember sitting in the hotel with my family a week ago and texting Devin about how we forgot to practice our dip. To think that was our biggest concern at the moment, when in a split second and a phone call later, our lives would change forever.”
Katie added: “Don’t forget to tell your people you love them. I would do anything to tell my big brothers one more time that I love them.”
In September, Katie revealed she honored her brothers with a new engraving on the wedding ring. “Forever with me now. J & M,” Katie wrote via Instagram Story on September 7, sharing a photo of the band with Johnny and Matthew’s initials.
Johnny and Matthew are also survived by another sister, Kristen Venellotheir parents, Guy and Janejohnny’s wife Meredithand Johnny and Meredith’s two children, Noah, 2, and Johnny, 10 months. (Meredith revealed in September that she was pregnant with the couple’s third child.)
