The best alien movie in decades is streaming on Hulu

There are few franchises that hurt you like Alien, and I’m not talking about the threat of a burst chest or acid blood. No, fans of this franchise have faced the nobler pains of pursuing perfection Foreign and Aliens to be tarnished by increasingly weird and desperate prequels and spinoffs. Even the return of Ridley Scott with films like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant disappointed, but we have good news for fans: Alien: Romulus is the franchise’s best entry in decades, and you can stream it now on Hulu.

While the exact chronology doesn’t matter to all but the most die-hard fans, you should know Alien: Romulus takes place between the first two films and focuses on a new cast of characters who make their way from their brutal planet (basically one big corporate city) to the Weyland-Yutani space station. They plan a heist that will allow them all to enter cryosleep and travel to the paradise planet, but soon discover that the station is abandoned for a very ugly reason. Mad science experiments on a xenomorph from the first Foreign they led to a station full of face huggers, xenomorphs, and one shadowy corporate android.

Cast Alien: Romulus is small but talented, including Cailee Spaeny, who is best known to fans of the genre for her role as Uprising in the Pacific. She is joined by Archie Renaux (best known for his role in the film Shadow and bone show) a Isabela Merced (whose performance was one of the better parts Transformers: The Last Knight). But the truly standout performance comes from David Jonsson, who plays an android whose various glitches and upgrades cause him to go from a character you can’t help but feel sorry for, to one that makes your blood run cold.

As great as this cast is, horror fans will probably be more impressed by the talent behind the camera. The film is directed by Fede Álvarez, who previously brought us surprisingly amazing Evil Dead remake. The film is also being produced by Ridley Scott, though we have to collectively admit that he’s lost a step or two (go check it out Gladiator 2 if you doubt me), it’s great to know that the director of the iconic first Foreign the movie is here to help steer this franchise in a whole new direction.

And it certainly seems like audiences are loving the direction. Alien: Romulus grossed $350.9 million at the box office against an $80 million budget. This led the studio to start workshopping ideas for a sequel, although nothing has been officially announced at the time of writing. It’s hard to blame the powers that be for taking their time with a sequel considering how long we’ve had to wait to get a xenomorph movie nearly as good as the first two films in the franchise.

Fortunately for viewers and the studio, Alien: Romulus was a critical and commercial hit. On Rotten tomatoesit has a critical rating of 80 percent and a Popcornmeter viewership of 85 percent. In general, critics praised the film for building on the best parts of what came before, while also introducing some great new ideas and creepy new designs.
