Best Actor Darth Maul loved seeing him die

IN A hidden threat, X-Men veteran Ray Park brought Darth Maul to life, and his mysterious villain quickly became the highlight of the entire Prequel Trilogy. However, as rock fans know, Park isn’t really the best actor to bring this Sith warrior to life. That honor goes to Darth Maul voice actor Sam Witwer, who explains in the video below why he loved his character’s death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi Rebels.

Sam Witwer and the Death of Darth Maul

If you don’t have Sam Witwer’s near-encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars, you might need a quick refresher… The Clone Wars the cartoon confirmed it Darth Maul cheated death and the character continued to plague our heroes in Rebels spinoff. In one episode Rebelswe get a rematch between Maul and a much older Obi-Wan Kenobi, but the fight ends almost immediately with Qui-Gon Jinn’s former apprentice killing this Sith once and for all. Many fans complained that this fight was short and ultimately disappointing, but in this fan convention video, Witwer breaks down why the fight was so perfect.

According to Sam Witwer, Darth Maul’s death came from the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi accepted the maturity of age and effectively lured the Sith warrior into a trap. The voice actor pointed out that if you watch Kenobi’s movements carefully, he will cycle through different lightsaber stances, effectively going from young Obi-Wan to older Obi-Wan. Witwer sees this bike ride as a way for the old man to realize that he has changed as a warrior as well as a Jedi Master, and therefore stopped holding his lightsaber as Ewan McGregor he held it like Alec Guinness.

The final lightsaber stance a Jedi takes is that of his own master, Qui-Gon Jinn. As Sam Witwer notes, Darth Maul caused the death of the old master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and when Kenobi takes a familiar stance, the Sith go for a repeat. In short, he thinks Obi-Wan is just copying what Qui-Gon did back then A hidden threat and tries to respond accordingly.

However, Kenobi has had nearly two decades to think about what killed his old master, and he perfectly resists Maul’s moves. His trick made it such a short fight as Maul got so close that his enemy could make an almost instant killing move. However, aside from Kenobi’s deception and fancy moves, Sam Witwer believes that Darth Maul’s death was caused by him underestimating his opponent.

In the actor’s words, the Sith see their enemy as “a hopeless man hiding in the desert”, someone who is a “coward” and a “failed Jedi”. Witwer claims that it is only after the defeat that Maul realizes that “this is a Jedi Master on active duty, and if he’s that good, it must be the most important guard post in the galaxy”. He notes that Kenobi is protecting the Chosen One, and through his hatred of Palpatine, he has an interesting perspective on that famous Jedi prophecy: “he will avenge us.”

Aside from Ray Park and George Lucas, few people have as much insight into the life and death of Darth Maul as Sam Witwer. His fascinating take on the character’s final showdown might not be enough to appease fans who think the fight is too short, but it certainly gave us a new way to look at one of our favorite Star Wars scenes. Between Witwer’s words and relatively high quality Ahsokaone thing is clear: there’s never been a better time to play Rebels and experience the best that a galaxy far, far away has to offer.
