Director Jason Reitman shared Chase’s reaction to the film in a recent episode Dana Carvey and David Spade‘with “Fly on the Wall” Podcast.. Carvey, 69, who set the scene for the story, joked, “Chevy loves to say things you shouldn’t say, to the point where he can go where he wants.”
Reitman, 47, began by knowing Chase, 81, “my whole life” and growing up as friends of his children. “So Chevy comes to see the movie and he’s there with (his wife) Jayne and they’re watching a movie,” he explains. “And he’s in the group and then he comes up to me and pats me on the shoulder and says, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed.’
The remark drew laughs from both Carvey and Spade, 60, the latter of whom said, “That’s exactly Chevy. You couldn’t have written it better. How funny.”
Meanwhile, Carvey added, “He knows it’s funny, like, ‘Okay, that’s the harshest thing you could say to a director at that point.'”
After Chase’s review, Reitman said he tried to “balance” the meaning of the actor’s words. “I know, ‘Okay, I’m getting a Chevy Chase moment that’s 1,000 percent just for me right now.’ And from a comedy point of view, it’s really clean and it’s kind of cool,” he stated. “But I also just spent two years of my life recreating that moment and trying to capture Chevy perfectly and also, even in the ego, to find the humanity and give him a moment to be loved — no, none of that. ” with — played. They don’t talk about those things.”
Spade also wasn’t sure how much of Chase’s comment was comedic and how much was true. “It’s a funny thing to say, but then you have to look at the meter and say, ‘What percentage was real? Was it all a joke or was there something he wasn’t happy with?'” he said. “But you just don’t know and he walks away and you’re like, ‘Well, he saw it.’
