Tim Tszyu posted on Instagram today and told his 283,000 followers that 2025 is the year “we all become great.” Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) admits that 2024 was not good for him, he lost his title and won it twice in a row.
First, he was defeated by Sebastián Fundora in a 12-round split decision on March 30. Then, on October 19, in Orlando, Florida, he was knocked out in the third round in a failed world title challenge against the undefeated IBF 154-pound champion. Bakhram Murtazaliev.
Tszyu’s loss to Murtazaliev was brutal and signaled that he needs to rebuild his career fighting domestic opposition in his native Australia.
It would be foolhardy for Tim to continue fighting five level fighters at 154 because a third loss would ruin the point of coming back. Mentally, it would be difficult, but fans would completely give up on Tszyu if he loses his next competition.
In retrospect, it was a mistake for Tszyu to challenge Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) in his first fight after a loss to Fundora. He should have picked a softer opponent instead of this guy, who is one of the hardest hitters in the division.
Murtazaliev’s power and offensive skills could be too much for Terence Crawford, Fundora and Israil Madrimov. Tszyu should have known better how to trade power shots with this guy.
“2024 a year of adversity. I considered myself a throwback fighter, I didn’t care who was in front of me, I was willing to take on anyone. Things don’t always go according to script… but that’s the best thing about boxing. What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger. I thank everyone for the support. I’m sorry for having disappointed a lot… I like to continue fighting with the best. And that is exactly what I will continue to do. And that is to continue with whoever. I hope everyone has a happy and prosperous New Year.
2025 is the year we all become BIG. In anything we do. Pursue greatness and never stop believing!! See you all very soon,” said Tim Tszyu in instagram.
