Timothee Chalamet and Elle Fanning’s ‘Holding Space’ Meme Nail Wicked

The duo that played in A complete unknownrecently interviewed Lawyerit’s you Tracy E. Gilchristotherwise known as the journalist who inspired the “holding space” meme for “Defying Gravity” lyrics.

Gilchrist introduced herself to Chalamet and Fanning by joking, “First I want to let you know that I’m holding a seat for you.”

Fanning, 26, replied: “Thank you, I’m impressed!” Chalamet, 29, agreed with his co-star’s assessment, adding, “Yeah, I’m impressed.”

The pair then perfectly executed their version of the now infamous one-finger hold that Grande, 31, gave Erivo, 37, last month.

“It is an honor to speak with you. I feel starstruck,” Chalamet continued. “I was like, ‘Holy s—, well, that would be better.’

Fanning admitted that she and Chalamet couldn’t top Eriva and Grande’s viral moment no matter what they did.

“There’s nothing we can do to overcome what happened, you know what I mean?” Fanning said. “We can try.

The “holding area” meme originated in November when Gilchrist interviewed Erivo and Grande seemingly endless Evil press tour. Memorably noting that she was “in queer media”, the journalist told the pair that she had seen people online “holding space” for the text of “Defying Gravity”.

Erivo responded that she hadn’t seen it in person but looked emotional as she said that’s what she wanted fans to get her performance as Elphaba. Meanwhile, Grande turned to her to offer support, but instead of holding her costar’s hand, she just grabbed one finger.

Grande later admitted that she didn’t understand what was going on when the “holding area” discussion was going on.

“So I had no idea what that part meant,” the pop star said Variety earlier this month. “I didn’t understand the first sentence.” And then I definitely didn’t understand what was going on and how (Cynthia) reacted. I was like, “Oh, what did she say, what did you hear?” And I wanted to be there because I knew something big was happening. And I didn’t know how to be there.”

Grande went on to say she grabbed Erivo’s finger because she thought her roommate “might need something,” but admitted she doesn’t know why she started tapping the finger.

Like the rest of the internet, however, Grande loved memes.

“I was really relieved that the world had the same experience of this moment as I did, because I felt like, ‘Oh, I’m not broken,'” she joked. “It’s best to really keep space with it.
