“I was 17 and stupid,” Culkin, 42, jokingly admitted in an interview with The Guardian posted on Saturday, December 28th.
Culkin and Ruffalo were in production in 2000 James Lapin play. The performance was Culkin’s Broadway debut. The Succession alum admitted that he saw a bag of props backstage and ultimately decided to trade one.
A few weeks later after the exchange, Culkin smelled a real joint and “watched” Ruffalo get hit before handing it to another actor. Culkin said he decided to come clean during the show’s hiatus.

“I’m like, ‘I thought it was a good prank. I’m stupid. Oh my god, I’m so sorry,” he recalled. “But they actually loved it. Mark says, ‘I haven’t smoked pot in 10 years; the other half will be so much fun.” There was another actor who had never smoked in his life. She says, ‘Is this what it means to be tall? That’s beautiful.” And then Phyllis Newman enters and replies, “I haven’t smoked since the 1960s. Thank you, dear.”
While Culkin’s costars saw no harm in the stunt, the play’s theater manager didn’t share a similar sentiment.
“Then the stage manager walks in and says, ‘I don’t care who it is or what happened, but Kieran, give me the joint,'” he mused. .”
After the incident, Culkin learned his lesson and never pulled a stunt like that again.

Ruffalo previously shared a smoking mishap during a performance in 2012 The Graham Norton Show. The Marvel star never revealed the identity of who it was for a joke.
“I did a play where I had to take a joint in the first scene,” he recounted. “And of course there was a very naughty young actor I was playing with who, on the opening night with all the critics, slipped a real joint on the prop table.

Ruffalo shared that while he was on stage, he and his bandmates were “smoking a giant butt on stage” and didn’t realize it until he noticed everyone laughing at his antics.
“I’m like, ‘Man, I’m in it tonight. i feel it I’m on fire. I can feel it,” he mused before asking around. “Why is that guy standing backstage laughing at me?” And the kid who put the joint on the table is standing there (laughs). And I just said, ‘Oh…'”
Despite the mishap, Ruffalo had no hard feelings as he ended up receiving the “best reviews” of his career.
