Democratic strategist James Carville explained Saturday with CNN host Michael Smerconish why he thought Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election.
Smerconish referenced a comment from a reader who reacted to Carville’s comment. New York Times op-ed Thursday, “This is from the New York Times: ‘Character, honesty, decency, intelligence, democracy. None of these seem to matter in our country when it comes to electing a president.’ I think that says it all. What would you say to him? to that person?
Carville responded, “Well, first of all, I totally agree with that person,” adding, “Michael, there’s a simple, basic rule of politics: Voters want an election about them. They don’t want an election about you or your family.” “And by far, we lost it. I lost it myself. We made it about Trump and not about the voters.”
Carville predicted a Harris victory before the election, and even wrote a separate article. op-ed for the Times titled “Three Reasons Why I’m Sure Kamala Harris Will Win.”

While there is talk of Democrats prioritizing attacks President-elect Donald Trump Faced with voters’ concerns, Carville asked: “How could I, at 80 years old, having been doing this for 50 years, fall to that level of stupidity?”
The veteran Democratic strategist also criticized his party’s understanding of how people receive their information, stating: “Now I’m going to learn about how people receive their information. I don’t think Democrats fully appreciate that.”
Carville highlighted the Republican Party’s use of alternative media, stating, “I think they are much better at what we would call alternative media, but I’m not sure that alternative media isn’t the main place where people get information now,” Adding, “I want to know where these people are getting this dumb information. And there’s so much misinformation out there that you just can’t correct it all.”
He also blamed voter anxiety over the Biden administration’s handling of inflation and the southern border about misinformation, stating: “People thought we had disorder at the border. People thought it was disorder in prices and inflation. People thought incorrectly. I would say that was crime.”

He also claimed that Republicans took the crisis at the southern border and “framed it as an economic issue. These people are coming to take away their jobs. In reality, they are doing no such thing.”

As for the future, Carville laid out three issues the Democratic Party should focus on for the upcoming election: “Let’s try to codify Roe v Wade, which has two-thirds support. It’s all over the Democratic Party. They can’t do it. Let’s talk about increasing the minimum wage at $15 an hour. That unifies the Democratic Party, which has more than two-thirds support. Let’s talk about taxes above 400,000. Take that money and put it in. a first-time homebuyer relief fund or a rental relief fund. They can’t do that.”
