David Morrell says “Mexican Monster” David Benavidez shouldn’t be “scared” and making excuses ahead of their February 1 light heavyweight fight. Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) has spoken about his concerns about Morrell’s VADA testing.
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) sees WBC interim 175-pound champion Benavidez cooking a PED excuse for their fans to explain “what went wrong” after losing the fight. If you tell your fans that you think Morrell, 26, was dirty, they will be understanding and won’t abandon you en masse.
With no excuse to justify the defeat, the fanatics will jump over the side of the sinking Benavidez ship, as rats abandoning a wobbly container on the high seas. It might be impossible for you to bring them back unless you come up with an excuse that they believe.
Many were willing to give Benavidez a pass for his final fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk when he said he was fighting through injuries. No x-rays were shown to verify the injuries, but fans still believed him because it was the first time.
Hopefully, Benavidez will show class if he loses instead of talking about his suspicions without information to back them up.
Cuban Morrell says that Benanavidez has been fighting guys who were not at his level his entire career, but now that he is facing someone at his level, he is afraid and talks about banned substances to cushion the blow if he is defeated.
“I shouldn’t be afraid. All his life he has been fighting against fighters who are not at his level. This is what happens when they are afraid. They start using excuses from everywhere,” David Morrell told Sean Zittelresponding to talk about VADA testing ahead of his fight on February 1.
This is the first time in Benavidez’s 12-year professional career that he has fought someone in a 50-50 fight, and it’s amazing how he has stooped to this level to spark conversations about banned substances. Will it be a mind game for Benavidez to gain a much-needed advantage against the younger, faster, stronger and more talented Morrell?
You can totally understand why Benavidez would be worried about this fight. If he loses, his dreams of a mega-million dollar fight against Artur Beterbiev vs. rematch. Dmitry Bivol 2 will be lost, and he will never have the opportunity to fight Canelo Álvarez either. He would be just one of the contenders at 175, fighting in the salt mines, not making much money.
