Gretchen Mol opens up about her life after being the ’90s “It Girl”.
“There are always new fresh faces in Hollywood,” Mol, 52, said People in an interview published on Saturday, January 4. “It’s a constant turning wheel. And it’s a youth-loving business – that’s the reality, but that’s okay.
Mol is perhaps best known for her role as Gillian on HBO Boardwalk Empirebut she also starred in films such as Roundy, Notorious Bettie Page, 3:10 Yuma and Manchester by the Sea.
“I think aging as an actor actually liberates you. You have more wisdom, more moments where you’ve been both up and down, and the stakes aren’t as high,” Mol said. “Your work becomes more about the fun and the process of making it, rather than what people will think of the result or say about you.”
Molina’s career has slowed since being dubbed the quintessential “It Girl.” Vanity Fair in 1998. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she moved from New York to the Berkshires and decided to stay there with her husband Todd Williams raising their two teenage children: 17-year-old son Ptolemy and 14-year-old daughter Winter.
“We still go into town when we need to, but the kids go to school locally,” Mol said People. “We found such a small, lovely community. Most people, I know what they do for a living, know what I do. And it’s just nice to be with them, to know their names. They’re really good people.”
According to Mol, her children are less than interested in her past career achievements. “Vanity Fairit specifically meant something in a way that if I tried to explain it to my kids, they’d just say, ‘What?'” she explained.
He is currently playing Mol Ed Burns‘upcoming movie, The Millers in marriagewhich follows an aging, once-cool rock star who sails through his second act as he deals with a failing marriage.
“They’re conversations I have with friends,” she said of a scenario she found relevant considering the stage in life when your children don’t require as much of your attention as they once did.
“I was fortunate to continue working while raising my children, but my priorities changed,” Mol continued. “But now I have more time to think about what I’ve always wanted to do.
