Denzel Washington will not add another trophy to the mantel after Golden Globe Awards 2025.
Famous actor, 70, was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Gladiator II. He ended up not winning during the ceremony on Sunday, January 5 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Kieran Culkin won an award for his performance in Real pain.
Washington had strong competition in this category Anora‘with Yura Borisov, A complete unknown‘with Edward Norton, Brutalist‘with Guy Pearce and Apprentice‘with Jeremy Strong rounding up the list of nominees.
Before this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, Washington had a long history with the awards show. He is the most nominated black actor of all time, earning a total of 11 nods during his decades-long career.
Washington previously won Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture Glory in 1990 and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Hurricane in 2000. In the second category, he received nine additional nominations, including for Freedom cries in 1988, Malcolm X in 1993, Training day in 2002, American Gangster in 2008, Flight in 2013, Fences in 2017, Roman J. Israel, Esq. in 2018, The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2022 and Gladiator II in 2025.
Washington also received the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award – which recognizes outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment – during the 2016 Golden Globe Awards.
Tom Hanks his costar in Philadelphia, honored Washington at the time, describing him as “the actor of our generation” with a “legendary and noble” body of work.
“Great cinema lasts forever and a great actor will forever amaze us. Now these clips remind us that a single name can be a superlative synonym for extraordinary,” Hanks said while introducing Washington. “One name can define an artist who is equal and equal to all the greatest legends of our craft. If Washington doesn’t ring a bell loud enough, then let the first name carry all the weight. And that name is Denzel.”
At that time, Washington accepted the award with his wife, Pauletta Washingtonand the couple’s three children — son John David and daughters Katya and Olivia — on stage next to him. (Son of the couple Malcolm was not present.)
After receiving the standing ovation, Denzel joked, “You really forget everything you have to do (up here),” adding that he was “speechless” at the honor.
