Ted Danson was honored with the Carol Burnett Award Golden Globes 2025.
The actor, 77, accepted the award before the live show during the Golden Globes Golden Gala on Friday, January 3 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The award was presented by his wife, Mary Steenburgen.
“For him, everyone at the Golden Globes should know that receiving a Carol Burnett award is like being let into creative heaven,” the 71-year-old actress said of Danson as she introduced him. In Danson’s speech, he joked that while he normally has a “confusing relationship” when it comes to accepting awards, he felt the complete opposite with this particular honor.
“If I win, I feel a little embarrassed and lonely. If I don’t win, I feel a little embarrassed and lonely. But not tonight. Not tonight,” he explained. “I am so excited to receive this award, Carol. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. You have brought so much joy and happiness to homes around the world. You radiate kindness. I love you so much.”
For her part, Burnett shouted “I love you” to Danson from the audience.
The Carol Burnett Award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to television on or off the screen. The honoree is chosen based on their body of work and the lasting impact their television career achievements have had on the industry and viewers.
Since the award was created in 2019, Danson is the fifth recipient, following in the footsteps of Burnett, 91, Ellen DeGeneres, Norman Lear and Ryan Murphy.
The Golden Globes named Danson this year’s honoree in December 2024.
“Ted Danson has entertained audiences for decades with performances that will forever be etched in television history,” Helen Hoehnepresident of the golden globes, he said in a statement at that time. “His career is a testament to his remarkable talent and versatility as an actor, and he lives up to the award’s namesake. I am honored to present him with the 2025 Carol Burnett Award in celebration of the tremendous impact he has made and continues to make on television.”
Danson is a three-time Golden Globe winner, with past trophies for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, an Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for Something about Amelia in 1985 and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Cheers in 1990 and 1991. During his career, he collected 13 nominations, including for his work on Becker and Damage.
This year, Danson earned another nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his role as Charles, a widower who hides out in a retirement community while helping a private investigator on a case in the Netflix series The man inside.
In November 2024, Danson opened up about exploring the themes of aging on the show.
“For us people, my age and older, you still have a lot to contribute,” he said People at that time. “So get out and keep going and the way you engage life to the end is an inspiration to those younger people who come after you and your children. Because people often think that creativity and contributing to life has some durability. It isn’t. It’s voluntary.”
