If you are traveling to the UK from this week, you may need to apply online for a travel authorization before you travel.

Starting Wednesday, the United Kingdom will require citizens of the United States, Canada and more than three dozen other countries to have a so-called electronic travel authorization, or ETA.

Here’s what travelers need to know:

What is an electronic travel authorization?

The ETA is prior authorization for travelers from countries where the UK does not require visas.

The UK launched the program in 2024 for visiting citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It will come into effect for a number of additional countries on Wednesday.

Travelers will still need to clear immigration upon arrival. The United States requires ETA from citizens of countries in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter. Later, in 2025, EU countries will require them from US citizens and nationals of other countries with similar criteria.

You do not need an ETA if you have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK.

How do I get one?

You can apply online using the UK ETA app to Android and iPhone. The application costs £10 (about $12.50) and is valid for two years and for visits of up to six months. The fee is paid by credit card.

Travelers will need to upload photos of their passport and themselves to apply.

How long does it take?

Applicants could wait about three days to receive a decision, sent by email.

What about the children?

Every person eligible for the ETA will need one, including infants and children.

What happens if I connect in the UK?

You will need an ETA even if you are traveling to a UK airport to take a connecting flight to another country.
