Adrien Brody clears up speculation that it’s banned Saturday Night Live.
The Brutalist star hosted a May 2003 episode of the NBC sketch show during which he controversially wore a wig with dreadlocks and spoke in a Jamaican accent to introduce the musical guest Sean Paul. He has since been speculated to be banned from performing, which she resurfaced Sunday, January 5 after he won award for best actor in Golden Globes.
But in an interview with Vulture Brody, 51, who went public last month, denied the rumor, though he added: “But I’ve never been invited back either,” he says with a laugh. “Then I don’t know what to tell you.”
Brody said it was his idea, though the costume provided the show. “Everybody was literally agape about my pitching,” he explained.
He added: “I think Lorne (Michaels, SNL creator) wasn’t happy with me beautifying myself a bit, but they let me do it.’
At Sunday’s Golden Globes, Brody took home best actor in a motion picture, drama, for László Tóth entered Brutalist. The award came 23 years after Brody won the Oscar Pianist at the age of 29.
“It’s been a lot of years, it’s been decades, and I’ve had a long life and a long career and a lot of highs and a lot of valleys,” Brody said. Brody noted that “it can all go away”, referring to his career that spanned more than three decades.
“I am very grateful. I’ve had a very blessed career, but as you can see, it’s still a challenge to find work that’s as meaningful as this,” the actor said, referring to Brutalist.
In the film, Brody plays a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor who immigrates to America after World War II.
“To be able to experience triumph in your life again is incredibly healing and rewarding,” Brody said, noting that the film “recounts the struggles of my family and the hardships they faced.” (In his acceptance speech Sunday, Brody said his character’s story is similar to his own family’s experience with the Holocaust.)
