Eddie Hearn said that Devin Haney wanted to be paid well for his warm-up fight and not the amount of money that type of fight is normally paid. He feels BLK Prime could have been willing to pay Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) the amount of money he wanted.
According to Hearn, Devin still wants the money that would be paid for compelling fights that fans want to see. That’s not realistic for a tune-up fight designed to knock off the rust, show him off against a fodder opponent and boost his confidence.
Hearn says Turki Al-Shiekh wants big fights, and that’s not in line with what Haney needs with a tune-up to prepare for a rematch with Ryan Garcia. If Devin were to face a good opponent on Turki’s card, there’s a good chance he’d lose if he was a halfway decent guy with a little pop in his punches.
Turki probably wouldn’t give Haney an easy job like George Kambosos Jr., Regis Prograis or Jorge Linares. I would want real quality like Jaron Ennis, Richardson Hitchins, Eimantas Stanionis or Brian Norman Jr. All of those fighters would probably beat Haney in style.
listen said boxing scene that Haney was not the type of person who would have been willing to accept between $500,000 and $1 million for a tune-up. He “He wanted to be paid well” for a fight that normally wouldn’t give that amount of money.
“For the amount of money he wants to have a comeback fight, that’s not easy because generally a comeback fight is not a big fight. Who is going to pay for it? If you can find someone who will pay a lot of money for a comeback fight, maybe it’s BLK Prime.”
This suggests that Haney still sees himself as a big name or champion despite losing to Ryan Garcia in a 12-round, three-knockdown majority decision on April 20 of last year. The New York State Athletic Commission later overturned the loss due to Ryan’s positive test for the banned PED Ostarine, but fans still saw it as a loss.
It will be interesting to see who Devin fights at BLK Prime on March 25. Will they let you fight a can of tomato and pay you a lot of money, or will they insist that you get your money’s worth? If so, Haney will likely lose and ruin his chances of a rematch with Garcia unless he is willing to fight him after a loss. I wouldn’t pass up Kingry to do that because he doesn’t seem interested in taking risky fights either.
“March, I’m back,” Devin Haney said on X. BLK then responded, “See you March 25 on BLK Prime.”
